Family Justice Council – Sorting out Finances on Divorce

23rd February 2017

In April 2016 the Family Justice Council, a Government Task Force of judges, lawyers and academics produced a guide for people who cannot afford legal advice but need to try and reach a financial settlement without having to go to court. Its aim is to provide a summary of the law and to demystify what is a complex area of law. It sets out how the family courts approach financial needs on divorce depending on what assets are available.

The guide provides information for couples going through divorce or ending a civil partnership and deals with the following:

  • Making an agreement without going to court.
  • What the law aims to do and takes into account – and so what you should aim to agree.
  • What sort of orders can be made.
